Chairman versus Captain

The finale of every season is the event advertised as Chairman v Captain. It was particularly special this year closing out the 90th anniversary season. Played over 6 triples, but with over 40 participating as some volunteered to play half a game. It was wonderful to see some of our very new members taking part. It was a gloriously warm and sunny afternoon befitting such a prestigious event.

The trophy is one of the largest the club owns, a silver gilt fruit bowl donated by President, Gordon Druce, in 2003. As the incumbent holder of the trophy, I was under strict instructions from my wife not to bring it home again this year! The first half closed with choc ices, tea and coffee being served and a rest was welcomed by nearly everyone. As expected, this primarily social event exposed the competitive nature of those taking part. Lots of banter, lots of noise and lots of tightly contested bowls.

The event concluded with Anne Begley, Club President once again presenting the bowl to the Chairman with the overall score 104 – 90, 3 rinks won by the Chairman’s team 2 rinks won by the Captain’s team and one rink drawn.

Once the formalities were out of the way we headed indoors for the most amazing cottage pie followed by an incredible fruit crumble with custard!! Both were irresistible. Time for the raffle. Winner of the annual hamper was Norman Wilson and Ray Cox took off the huge box of chocolates. Many thanks to Anne Begley and the ladies of the catering group for a fantastic meal. Thanks also to Colin Houghton and his helpers for covering the bar which did extremely well.
